What is Depression?
According to the DSM-5, depression is the presence of sad, empty, or irritable mood, accompanied by somatic and cognitive changes that significantly affect the individual’s capacity to function. There are different diagnoses for depression depending on the duration, timing, and cause.
Depression negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you behave. Depression causes feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.

- Feeling sluggish and tired most days of the week
- Feeling sad for long periods of time, most days of the week
- Wishing you were dead or intentionally hurting yourself
- Feeling worthless or hopeless
- Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy

- Feeling guilty for no reason
- Change in normal sleep patterns
